We have now grown cucumbers every year and tried out different varieties. Because of the difficulty in sufficient pollinators roaming our balcony, we finally optimized cucumber growing with the ‘Cucumber F1 Louisa’ variety. It is a cucumber variety which produces only female flowers and does not require pollination. With this variety we have had great success. Lots and lots of large, sweet and juicy cucumbers and at the same time this variety seems a little more resistant to powdery mildew, which is a common pest attacking cucumber plants.
The only thing to note with growing cucumbers is that, like courgettes, they require a lot of water and not quite as hot a location. They do appreciate not being in the direct 30-40 degree C sun.
